Things to do in San Miguel de Allende

Here are some unique things to do in San Miguel in addition to shopping, walking around the town, browsing art galleries, and stopping at restaurants and bars:

* Sunday House and Garden Tour. Bus leaves at 12 from the library for a 2-hour tour of San Miguel's finest homes. Tickets are approximately $12 per person and go on sale a the library at 11am. Ticket sales proceeds go towards the educational benefit of the youth of San Miguel.

* Visit Guajuye, the local glass factory and witness the art of glass blowing. Call 011 52 (415) 152-7033 to make a reservation for a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday morning (10:30am) factory tour reservation. Ask for an Engligh-speaking guide if you need one.

*Hot Air Balloon ride over and around San Miguel. Contact Jay Kimball, a licensed/certified pilot at 011 52 (415) 152-6735 or email finnworld@yahoo.com to make a reservation. He has 4,6,or 8 passenger gondolas. The one-hour flight departs at sunrise. The cost is $150 USD per person, which includes breakfast.

* Take a day trip to one of the nearby towns; Queretaro (very nice colonial town with nearby wine vineyards, interesting parks, museums, shops, and cafes), Dolores Hidalgo (historic town known for its talavera factories), Guanajuato (charming old silver mining city), or Pozos (ghost mining town with ruins, underground mine shafts, tunnels).

Geography

San Miguel de Allende is located in the mountainous region of Central Mexico, in the state of Guanajuato. It is located about a 4 hour bus drive to Mexico City, 1 1/2 hour drive to Guanajuato, and about 2 1/2 hours from Leon.
