There are many ways to arrive at San Miguel de Allende. Please first note that a valid passport is required to travel to Mexico and to gain re-entry into the United States. Please visit the "Passport Information" link on the left-hand side.
First of all, we do not recommend renting a car and driving in Mexico! Also, you will definitely not need a car in San Miguel, and parking is hard to find. Below are some options for transportation. Feel free to ask us any questions and we will try our best to help you all get there smoothly.
You may fly into three airports in Mexico to get to San Miguel. I recommend looking at www.travelocity.com for flights. You must arrange for transporation to/from our hotel in San Miguel from each of these airports. Contact info and websites for private transportation, buses, etc. are at the bottom of this page.
There are two ways to arrive to the hotel in San Miguel from the three airports:
1. Take an official airport taxi to a bus station, and take a "Primera Plus" or "ETN" bus to San Miguel. Then take a taxi or shuttle from the San Miguel bus station to our hotel. This is the most inexpensive way, and "Primera Plus" and "ETN" buses are VERY comfortable and nice.
2. Arrange for private transportation or a shuttle pick up. This is the easiest way, but can be more expensive. They will pick you up at the airport of your choosing and bring you directly to the hotel. If you are coming in a group from Leon or Queretaro, this is a great option. However, it may be more comfortable to take a bus if you are coming from Mexico City, as the ride will be about 3-4 hours depending on traffic and the seats on the bus are extremely comfortable. Shuttles are also available to pick you up at each airport, although there is a small possibility you may have to share the shuttle with others and make additional stops. Mention you are a guest of the "Alejandra Campbell wedding" and you will receive a discount at the companies listed at the bottom of this section.
Here are the airports and options:
1. The Aeropuerto del Bajio (airport code: BJX) is served by Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Aeromexico, and Delta Airlines. The BJX airport is located 170 km (about 110 miles) from San Miguel, between the cities of Leon and Guanajuato, the state capital. This is more expensive than flying into Mexico City, but less expensive than flying into Queretaro. You should be able to find tickets for approximately $525 to $625 per person.
2. The Aeropuerto Internacional de Queretaro (airport code: QRO) is about 70 km (40 miles) from San Miguel de Allende, is served by Continental Airlines and Aeromexico. This airport is the most expensive option of the three airports because there are few daily flights coming in from the US. In my opinion, taking a taxi is the best way to get from the Queretaro airport to our hotel.
3. The Benito Juarez Airport (airport code: MEX) in Mexico City, which is about 4 hours by bus, (3-4 hours by car) from San Miguel de Allende. The Mexico City airport has a larger choice of flights and is served by a broad range international airlines from across the world. In general, flights to Mexico City are cheaper than flights to BJX or QRO, however flying into Leon or Queretaro is considered more convenient. You should pay less than $500 (average $350-max $500) per ticket to fly from Minneapolis to Mexico City.
