The Proposal @ Fort George - Niagara-on-the-Lake

We had planned a Valentine's day trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake in celebration of our 5th Anniversary which had just passed in November. We planned to stay at the Queen's Landing Inn, do some winery tours, couples massages, explore the town and also booked a really cool food and wine pairing dinner called "Savour the Sights" at the Jackson-Triggs Winery... however, the plans changed slightly at the last minute....

The following is our take on the events that transpired during that fateful Valentine's Day weekend of 2009.

I didn't plan anything! But I woke up friday morning to a spence diamonds ad on the radio..and i was like...OMG if thats not a sign i dunno what is. So after i picked up the rental car i went to go get the ring and bought it in like 15 mins cuz kristy was waiting for me to get her.

I had it in my pocket all day on Friday when we walked thru the main street of Niagara-on-the-Lake then went to dinner...i didn't wnat to do it in a restaurant or anything and wanted it to be just us two so I waited until the next day.

After breakfast the next morning (Valentine's Day), I was thinking i would do it by the waterfront. So i asked her if she wanted to walk around so we walked to the waterfront (niagara river) but then there were some sketchy pick-up truck dudes hanging around there and i didn't really want to do it in front of them so we walked somewhere else just following some trail... the trail led to an old fort called fort george... and i saw a nice open field that reminded me of the shawshank redemption and i thought it would be nice! So just before the field kristy is like "omg can't believe this is really an old fort there must have been so much death and destruction here." But i guess what she said didn't really register because i was really nervous at this point because i wanted to say something really cool...but my brain was a mess... so i was like ah screw it and i pulled out the ring and i was like "hey, i bought something for u" and shes like "whats this? a present?" i was like "surrrrre..." i duno what i said but it wasnt too smooth cuz she was like "well arent u supposed to get on one knee?" and i was like oh crap... and yeah that was that!

We arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Friday and from the minute we set foot in the town, he was already pointing at every open grassland and saying “Oh!  That’s a nice place!  Lets go for a walk there later on”. If you know him, you’d know that he’s the last person to want to “walk” around; however, I was clueless!  His suggestions continued during dinner, and on Saturday during breakfast.  By Saturday morning I had an idea that he had something in store, but didn’t know what.

We walked around the lake/river, and the whole time I was cursing that it was so cold and that my ears would fall off from frostbite. I wanted to go back inside to the warmth of the hotel; however he persisted that we continue walking. We stumbled upon Fort George, an old fort that was closed for the winter. We walked around the fort to an open field where he then pulled out a box from his pocket and said “I got you something”.

I said, “Wow! Is it my birthday?!” I opened it and found a ring inside. I asked what it was, and he said “it’s an engagement ring”. At this moment most people would start to cry, but I started to laugh out of sheer surprise.

He continued to stand there while I kept saying, “What?! What?!” and giggling. For a few minutes I could not say anything. It all seemed like a blur. Then I said “wait a minute, aren’t you supposed to get on your knee and ask me something?” He did and I said YES!

I’m still in shock that I am now “engaged” and totally surprised that he managed to sneak past my radar to buy a ring.
