Engaged at last and it was very romantic....
Having been persuaded to go to a boring business afternoon only because it was being held at the famous Mount Nelson Hotel (http://www.mountnelson.co.za/web/ocap/mount_nelson_hotel.jsp) in the centre of Cape Town, I was really not looking forward to it. The girls were very excited but I didn't notice because I was too busy moaning about working on a Saturday! Driving down to the hotel I made Neville promise me that he wouldn't leave me with any dodgy old cleavage watching business blokes or their over jewelled and hairsprayed wives (very stereotyped I know but true). In hindsight he was a bit quiet but I was talking quite a lot!
When we got the Mount Nelson (eventually as men don't believe in map books or asking and GPS doesn't know where the Mount Nelson is) we were, surprisingly, early. We had a walk round the gardens which are beautiful then, impatiently, I went in to the foyer to ask where the function was.
Neville very quietly asked the receptionist where Louis was (which I thought strange but presumed it was the company contact) while I checked the list of functions being held (no business lunch), and I STILL didn't have a clue.
As we were early Neville suggested that we sit in the music room and have a drink. When he ordered two glasses of champagne I STILL didn't think anything was suspicious, in fact I thought it was very generous of the hosting company to give us champagne!
Neville popped off to the loo (actually giving the maitre d' - Louis - the ring) and we were served the champagne when he came back. We toasted each other and took a sip (very nice) and Neville asked what I thought. When I didn't notice, he picked my glass up and waved it in front of me so I could see the ring at the bottom. My reaction was probably not very romantic - "are you giving me a sticky ring?" (Enough Lolly) but when he got down one one knee and told me that he had no speach but would I marry him I did reply, "in a heartbeat". Does that redeem me?
All the staff came over to congratulate us and we sat in the gardens eating the hotel's famous high tea (highly recommended) and having some more champagne.
We both actually managed to hold our emotions together until Neville told me that he, Mara and Rory had planned everything weeks ago and that all our SA friends had known and most were waiting at Mara's to congratulate us, have a braai and watch the Stormers (not necessarily in that order!) Then I started bubbling and Nev also got a tear in his eye. The waitress, very discreetly, put a box of tissues on our table.
How can I trust anyone again?????
And the ring - for your information is Tanzanite set in white gold with 4 diamonds at each side.
Gorgeous and definitely worth waiting for..... and the ring's very pretty too!!!! haha
