Any Press is Good Press....so they say..!!! 2012-03-11

I've heard the saying before, "any" press is "good" press.  I am really hoping this is true.  Thus far, many have commented on how they "liked" my first article in our local paper.  I am happy to get my name out there, and undecided on how I feel about the wording of it all.  Perhaps the writer was just trying to be witty and clever, at my expense.  Anyhow, here is the first write up in our local newspaper on Bella Moon!

The cake baker gets engaged!!! 2012-02-26

On Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 I got engaged to my love, Oliver (aka Dayalan).  It wasn't quite a surprise, as he asked me for help in picking out the ring.  However, I was surprised that once we "got" the ring, he didn't make me wait long at all to propose to me.
So, the big question everyone is asking...."Are you going to make your own wedding cake?".   And the answer is.....OF COURSE!!!
Yes, it might be a little (or a lot) hectic, busy, ambitious.  But why not?  What better than that?  It will only cost ingredients, and my time is for my own benefit and his, and our guests.  Totally worth it to me.  Then I know for sure I am getting the very cake that I want.
I already have a vision for it...but will reveal those details later.
I am very excited, what a fun time.  And now I can relate to my clients in a deeper way.  I've imagined what they feel like, and now I know!  I love you, my darling Dayalan...and I'm going to let you pick all the flavors!

Fondant Dinosaurs rule this cake! 2012-02-17

I met with Kathy and Wayne one month prior to their wedding date to discuss their wedding cake design.  Two tiers, yummy flavors, fun and playful was the theme.  Wayne is a geologist, so naturally they saw bride and groom fondant dinosaurs as the perfect topper for their wedding cake.  Foliage surrounding the sides of each tier was mentioned to compliment the dinosaur scenery.
I looked forward to starting this cake long before the date finally came around.  I like to start my cakes two days prior to the big event. This happened to land on the one day of the week I still work as a physical therapist.  Luckily, I love working hard, so I rented my commercial kitchen for 6pm, just enough time to drive from one place of work to the next (although I like to refer to this second place as "the place of play and creativity".
I ate a giant lunch to fuel myself for this full day.  Baking, filling, icing, fondant rolling and draping over the cakes. Over the next day and a half, I spent roughly 18 hours shaping the dinosaurs, dying, cutting and placing each piece of foliage, and all the other intricate details.  I rolled the veil fondant super thin to give it a fabric look, and sprinkled it with disco dust for sparkle.  The final masterpiece was completed 30 minutes before Wayne arrived for pick up.  I am so grateful for small local business support, and for the honor of making a fun couple's wedding cake, and for the joy of expressing the creativity that is churning in my heart.  Happy Wedding Day Kathy and Wayne and thanks for requesting the most fun cake I've ever made!

A physical therapist becomes a cake baker.... 11/26/2011 2011-12-24

I started working as a physical therapist when I graduated with my Master's Degree in 1999.  I started baking cakes just over 3 years ago. It was a birthday for a highly respected person, and 80 or so people were expected at this party. I made one practice cake, my first homemade cake ever, and then "the" cake.  And wah-laa...a cake baker was born. The feedback on this first cake was overwhelming, and really, I thought nothing of it.  I did start baking cakes for all of my friends' birthdays, and I enjoyed giving the gift of the most delicious cake I could create.  All the inspiration and love I felt as I baked went into each cake as well.  I never quit my day job, as they say, and over the course of 3 years I've made quite a lot of cake. In September of 2011 I had the incredibly amazing experience of baking my first wedding cake...three cakes actually!  Again, the feedback I received from the bride, groom, their families and the guests, was that my cake is really yummy. Many people around me, and myself included, started to talk about "my bakery", referring to some ambiguous future adventure, and how awesome it would be.  My cakes were tasty, and I was learning how to make them pretty and pleasing to the eye as well as to the palette. This was all just for fun, you see, I never had intentions beyond that.  Even the bakery talk was just a silly, fun so-far-out-there fantasy.
And then, I walked into work one month ago or so, and my co-workers looked at me with panic in their eyes, "Did you hear?".  Nope, I was clueless as to what had transpired, as I worked part time, and this "thing" happended on one of my off days.....my hours were being cut down to just 8.  So, my talk of what i would do... start a cake business, of course!  "Bella Moon Cakery", the name came to me at work, inbetween patients, like a flash.  That's perfect, it just fits, it resonates.  Somehow, within one week, I had my business name registered, I looked into renting a certified kitchen, and wow.....here it is. Bella Moon is an L.L.C., and I've rented my kitchen, and I have this website, business cards, and things are rolling. And that is how a physical therapist became a cake baker...  (more...)
