Babes for a Cure cupcakes 2008-10-26

On the 18th Babes for a cure hosted an awesome fundraiser for Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure campaign. Volunteering to make some sweets as so many attendees have, I was inspired to make some cupcakes which I don’t often have the chance to do. White cake cupcakes were used as a blank canvas. A simple design using fondant was used. I did not plan ahead any particular design, but I think the results are simple and elegant. I was amazed to see the turnout and it was great to catch up with old friends. So many great vendors were there and I met another cake decorator from Maryland who made a truly awesome cake using the Pink Theme. I even managed to buy a baby shower gift for a co-worker, how convenient. I wish Babes for a Cure all the success in the future because they truly are inspiring people here in Virginia to do good things!

Making a Monster 2008-10-30

Okay so Yoda is not really a monster but this cake could have gone anywhere. Star Wars was my inspiration. I don’t think I got Yoda 100%, but his essence is in the cake. Maybe he could pass for his brother :) I learned some very important lessons with this cake.

  1. Architecture….Engineering….Design (Yes you need to think how gravity can effect your flour and sugar creation)
  2. German chocolate cake with wonderfully moist pecan and coconut filling does not make for a structurally sound cake.
  3. Bamboo skewers do not hold as well as wooden dowels.
  4. Making rice crispies from scratch can be a pain when you can just buy it as I see Duff does on Ace of Cakes.
  5. Rice crispies when modeled after Yodas head is very heavy.

Here are some snapshots of the process. It was a lot of fun. For the finished product click HERE!

Finally Figured out where this cake came from 2008-12-25

A client wanting a purse cake gave me a thumbnail size picture to go from. I wasn’t quite sure where it was from but I finally found out!

This is a cake purse from Neiman Marcus.

 From their website:

Exclusively ours. At first, you won’t want to cut into this edible masterpiece, but when you taste each layer, you’ll be glad you did.• Chocolate decadance cake.
• Layered with caramel toffee buttercream and chocolate buttercream.
• 10″H x 8″W x 4 1/2″D; serves 10-12.

Zebra-Striped Handbag Cake

Price: $235.00 Delivery & Processing Only: 29.00

(THAT IS $23.50 per Serving…it better be good!!!!!!!!!!!)

My rendering of the Cake purse is not that bad. I sort of freestyled the clasp because I wasn’t quite sure what was going on there since again I had only about a 1″ thumnail to go by.

If I sold this cake like Neiman Marcus my ad would go somthing like this.

Exclusively yours. At first, you won’t want to cut into this edible masterpiece, becuase you will be confused. Utensils not required. • Chocolate Devil’s food cake.
• Layered with swiss buttercream.
• serves many.

Princess Cake 2009-03-13

For a special little girl we created some cute little flowery cupcakes for her and her friends. For the adults they had their own special cake with a Barbie diamond castle edible image. While the kids enjoyed super sweet cupcake icing, the adults enjoyed the light fluffiness of Swiss-Buttercream.

Both cake and cupcakes were made of deliciously moist yellow cake.
