Easy, elegant entertaining doesn't have to be intimidating or exhausting. Entertaining can actually be a spirited and much-accomplished undertaking. With some organization, some industry-known fundamentals, and an enthusiastic attitude, planning an event can definitely be enjoyable and fun!

Volunteers Needed for the 2010 Dance Parade 2009-09-17

Dance, dance my little pretties!

Dance, dance my little pretties!

Imagine 10,000 people of all colors, sizes and rhythms dancing down Broadway…

It’s a reality, and you can help make it happen!

We are looking for some take-charge people to take on leadership roles as we plan for the 2010 NY Dance Parade. We’re an all-volunteer (for now) organization full of passionate and life-celebrating who can’t stay still, and if you can spare 3-5 hours a week we urge you to join this worthwhile organization! Right now, we’re especially looking for:

OUTREACH COORDINATORS
You’ll recruit, communicate with, and coordinate individuals and dance groups participating in the parade. You may be assigned an area or a particular style of dance. An active presence in any NYC dance scene is helpful, but not necessary.

DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATES & FUNDRAISERS

You’ll help us raise the funds we need to put on the parade, which can include grant writing, securing sponsorships, providing leads, and planning events. Experience preferred, but persistence and persuasiveness can go a long way.

MARKETING & PROMOTION

You’ll help us get the word out about the parade! This can include anything from writing press releases to being part of our street team. Creative and enthusiastic people would be great here. We are especially looking for someone with a journalism background.

TECHNOLOGY

Site maintenance and recommendations. Experience in web design and database management preferred.

RECRUITMENT

You’ll get the best people for the job. Should be friendly and organized.

An introduction to the art of calligraphy 2009-09-17

The Fine Art of Calligraphy

For more information about the class and to register…

Fine Writing: An introduction to the art of calligraphy
Christopher Calderhead October 17, 24
9:30 am – 3:30 pm
$150 members / $190 non-members
All levels OK, you’re interested in calligraphy. But where do you begin? This short course is a good starting place. We look at all the basic tools, materials and techniques you need to explore the world of calligraphy. We begin by learning about the different kinds of papers and vellum scribes use. Then we look at the tools: pens, pencils, brushes, T-squares and triangles. And we discuss the different kinds of ink and watercolors you can write with. The course takes a hands-on approach. You’ll learn how to handle paper, how to rule lines, and how to use the edged pen. In the first class, we’ll make simple hand-sewn notebooks, and then we’ll explore a pared-down roman script as a way of gaining mastery of the basic lettering technique. We’ll also look at many examples of historical and contemporary calligraphy. You’ll learn about the different scripts – Uncial, Carolingian, Gothic, Italic, and copperplate, to name a few. You’ll see where they came from and how they developed. We’ll also look at the work of twentieth century and contemporary masters of the art such as Edward Johnston, Rudolf Koch, Donald Jackson, Thomas Ingmire, and Denis Brown. Lists of books, periodicals, and websites will be provided for further study. This is the best first course for beginners. After you’ve completed the course, you’re ready to go on to study any of the popular scripts offered by the Society of Scribes. The course will also fill in the gaps for intermediate students who want to gain a richer appreciation for the tradition and learn good workshop practices. Materials:  Most materials will be supplied by the instructor (see below). What you should bring these things to class: 2H pencil
Eraser (Mars Staedler or kneaded rubber are good)
Pencil sharpener
18 inch ruler A pen holder, nibs, ink, and packet of fine papers will provided for each participant. A materials fee of $20 will be collected at the first class.

Instructor

Christopher Calderhead is the Editor of Letter Arts Review and has been a professional calligrapher and teacher since 1988. He is author of Illuminating the Word: The Making of The Saint John’s Bible, which chronicles the creation of one of the major manuscripts of our time. His work can be seen on his website:  Christopher Calderhead
