Amidst the Current Focus on the Future, Retro Styles Make a Come-Back

In the Wedding Industry, with One Company Leading the Way

As the 2009 wedding season begins, this year’s trends are already beginning to emerge. 

Last year’s chocolate brown is being replaced with more organic greens and blues, and

eco-friendly paper products are a must have.  E-vites and other internet based RSVP tools are also being utilized to save both money and time.

As the industry focuses on new wave and high-tech wedding tools, a seemingly contrary trend has also surfaced: vintage and classic style weddings.  Terri Jamison, owner and innovator of Documents and Designs, LTD noticed the trend late last season and immediately began creating wedding stationery for her site www.documentsanddesigns.com, anticipating a new demand for an old style.  These retro designs feature bold flourishes and illustrations that emulate styles reminiscent of Elizabethan origin.

Ms. Jamison’s website offers these and many other designs for a plethora of wedding stationery including table cards, programs, escort cards and seating charts (among many others – all of which can be seen on the website).  What makes the site so unique is the ability for the customer to personalize every item they order. “[I] welcome the creative insights of our customers” she states on her website, believing that the customer should play a large role in the creative process involved in designing their products.  “After all,” she says, “it’s their wedding.  They should get what they want.”  This process can include choosing the print color, personalizing the products with names and dates, and in some cases the company can create brand new designs and products to accommodate the client’s needs.

The company’s biggest claim to fame is that it is one of the pioneers of the internet-based stationery industry.  Starting in 1990, the company’s origins were based around hand-painted seating charts and documents made from Jamison’s studio.  Only a few years later, Jamison, using her intuition and keen ability to foresee upcoming trends, began working on a website to display her work.  The term “e-commerce” had not even been invented yet, but Terri could see the unlimited potential of the internet as a sales venue.  The site was launched in 1998 and offered products based on her original paintings, now adapted to fit on any product she desired.  With the new site, she could now offer something no one else had ever seen: customizable table cards, including table numbers, table names and the increasingly popular memorabilia cards that allow the bride and groom to tell stories of how they met or places they plan to visit during their honeymoon.  Now, nearly 20 years later, the company is leading the stationery industry, at times setting new trends, and is one of the highest ranking stationery websites in its field.

So while trends come and go, Jamison’s focus will always be in style.  “Offer a unique, quality product that allows the customer to be the artist,” she says.  It’s not a new idea, but it has worked for Documents and Designs for nearly 2 decades and it hasn’t lost its flavor yet.
