Jay Kelly is a pioneer in the natural-style of wedding photography and portraiture. His unique style infuses a love of fashion, fine art portraiture and photojournalism in both color and black & white photography. With a Masters in Fine Art and spending two years abroad in France and Australia, Jay's passion for photography came to fruition while based in California. He is the recipient of the RTNDA industry award for Best Feature, as well as Concordia University's Award for Film Excellence. Most recently Jay was honored to receive the Best of Category Award at the WPPI photography convention in Las Vegas. He travels the world extensively on assignment for his clients.
Jay Kelly - Artist Statement
Ultimately my objective is to deliver the most beautiful images you've always dreamed of--powered by your passion and my love to capture it. My approach to photography stems from one simple concept: pursue the passion and great images will follow. Above all, keep it creative and fun. While shooting, I'm attuned to the emotion of the moment, and the telling of a great story as it unfolds. I'm interested in giving unusual perspectives and paying attention to the finer details that are either taken for granted or overlooked.
I love the impact of mixing black & white with color, sepia or blue tones. When it comes to color, I lean towards a heavily saturated 'magazine' style that delivers extremely vivid, high contrast coloration. I'm a staunch believer in using natural light whenever possible. EVERYBODY looks better in natural light so I use flash only when absolutely necessary. I also believe that there's no better backdrop than nature, so I shoot a minimum in the studio.
