Testing the Fijifilm X-Pro 1 2012-05-03

It’s a great camera– the X-Pro 1. It really is … but it does have one major issue: the focusing. I realize this is an issue that has been around a while but my 7-year old Cannon focuses faster. It works excellent in almost every other way (although, I accidentally turned on the bracketing function and haven’t been able to turn it off yet). The image quality is beautiful. And I am still excited about photographing anything. I would love to go to India or some other exotic place to try it out (Zack Arias has already done that) but I am satisfied to play with it here… in my own backyard. For now.

New Times 2012-04-28

New look.

New camera.

New life.

New job.

I started this blog while I attend graduate school at Ohio University. ( I wanted to call it “The Space between,” but that already exists. It’s also a book title, a song title and a theater group.) Documentary Stories, my former title,  didn’t quite capture what I wanted to say. The Pickle and the Egg is just filler for now. We’ll see where that goes.

So last week I bought a new camera: a Fujifilm x Pro 1 and I feel like I have never picked up a camera before. It has been about seven years since I bought my last camera, a Canon 1-D Mark II, but this camera is more foreign to me then any camera I’ve ever owned. I would like to say it’s like a Leica M9 but I can’t since I have never used one. It’s nothing like my Leica M6, which I still love. I can say that I’m very excited about it…more so then just buying a new camera. I’s hard to get use to: it’s settings are all wrong and the focus is slow. But it feels wonderful to shoot with.

So what I like to write about and show are pictures from my new camera, pictures from amazing photographers, what’s going on in the world of photography, what’s going on in the media, or just what’s going on in my world. Since graduate school, I am incredibly fortunate to be teaching at Hampton University. It has allowed me to inspire, influence and teach something I am passionate about: photography. So there you are…
