Today's Find: ColorSnap App by Sherwin Williams 2011-08-14

Okay, so this might not seem the most obvious find of the day for a wedding and event planner, but I tell you, this can come in super handy!! You can visit this link: ColorSnap App to get the App or search on your phone.

I downloaded this App a while back and just today decided to play with it. It lets you take a photo or chose one from your phone's saved photos and you can then click anywhere on the photo to get color matches (up to 3). I played with it for over an hour today and had way too much fun!! You can then adjust the colors chosen by lightness, saturation, and hue. Then save any or all of your color palettes. You can also just browse through their color book and chose colors without a photo, where you can get coordinating color options.

So how does this apply to brides and wedding planning? Well, if you have an inspiration picture and need an instant idea for color palette - this is a great tool! Or if your favorite color is blue - find your perfect shade of blue, then find suggestions for complimentary color palettes. It's really fun and a great tool in design for events and home! (more...)

Your Wedding Soundtrack 2011-07-15

If your wedding day was a movie - what would you want your "soundtrack" to be? Music for a wedding, just like a movie, needs to compliment the story, help to tell the story, but not overpower or distract.

Music is sometimes the last thing couples think about...and with everything else you have to figure out and worry about...it does seem seemingly less important than say, what your vows will be or what you'll eat or wear! But, don't let it get away from you. Be it a dj, a string quartet, a soloist, or band (or combo of!), make it important. It should have some significance to you and your fiance.

I chose all my music very carefully...I wanted to look back and know I'd incorporated my favorite artists and songs that meant something to us. I had some of my favorite "romantic" songs playing during the prelude. I had the parents walk down to a lovely guitar piece from Bob Schneider (one of my favorite Austin musicians), and I walked down the aisle to "the Nearness of You" by Norah Jones...because while we were dating, I sang it to Curtis ALL the time...and because it was different. Our wedding was in September, so the recessional was "Autumn" by Vivaldi (see program below). We did a hilarious opening Wedding Party dance (photos). For the first dance, we came up with a few options, and then I had Curtis make the final decision on that one. Last song of the night was "Everyday" by DMB. I will always have that memory of everyone dancing and singing. It was fun and for me, made my day that much more memorable.

So, what will your Soundtrack be? Make a playlist in itunes and tweak it while you're planning. I promise you'll be glad you did. It's just one of several ways to infuse your personality, so make sure it compliments your day!!

And ... if you decide to have your wedding videotaped, make sure the videographer has all the music from the day so it can be used in the video!

Happy Planning!! :)

For the love of orange skies and crazy dogs 2010-04-28

Hello world! Welcome to the Orange Sky Event Design Company blog and my personal blog. Why both? Well, I'm not a huge fan of blogging, if I'm being honest. But I know that it's important to share company work, and I plan on sharing design and personal inspirations (so that you may understand my motivations, if you want), and just because, well, it's almost expected now. So here it is. This is my first post...
For the love of orange skies?... Well, who doesn't love to see the sunset and see the different shades of orange and just feel more energized by how beautiful it is and how lucky we are to see those sunsets. It was also inspired by my brother, UT grad and one of my best friends. While watching a Longhorn game, the Walter Cronkite voice-over UT commercial came on, and he said something to the effect that ... you only get orange skies like that in Texas. So...yes, I agreed, and we thought that might just be a good name for the company. After throwing it around with friends and family for a while, along with some other names, I decided this was the best fit. Something inspiring, bright, happy, and beautiful. And well, orange just happens to be one of my favorite colors.

Crazy dogs?... My Broadway. He's a lab-mix and too smart sometimes for his own good. I call him crazy dog when he does that running thing all over the backyard when all you do is "act" like you're going to chase him. He's my cuddle buddy and almost always in the same room with me when I'm at home. The company mascot if you will.
Everything in between?... My husband, friends and family, why I love wedding and event design and putting it all together. That's what you'll find here. I think, or at the very least, hope you might laugh, learn and be inspired and check out some spectacular events while you're at it. (more...)

A top 10 list for why you should hire a wedding/event planner and Orange Sky! 2010-05-03

Wow, it's amazing that it's been nearly a year since we had the opportunity to help plan Carol and Jay's wedding. I wanted to share their top 10 list of reasons to hire a wedding/event planner (us in particular!) because it really does sum up the details of how we are able to help and make your day special for you and something you haven't had to stress about! Carol has a great sense of humor and is an organization freak (like myself), and yet she understood (probably better afterwards, than before) just how nice it was to have us. So I included her "testimonial" she sent us after the wedding and included a few pictures, courtesy of Jessica Monnich Photography, from their Italian inspired wedding! Enjoy!!

1. OCD-worthy attention to detail. That gave us such a peace of mind during the entire wedding process. I truly did feel so calm and peaceful on our wedding day (people even commented on how calm I was!). We totally trusted you to take care of the details which allowed us to fully enjoy our big day with family and friends. 2. Value. I can’t even begin to convey how valuable you’ve been not only to us, but to everyone involved in the making of our wedding. No lie, literally every single one of our vendors commented to us about how helpful/organized/professional etc. y’all are. At my brother’s wedding, my mom (along with a team of her friends) were frantically running around trying to keep everything organized and on track. It makes me so happy to know that she was able to relax and enjoy mine. I owe y’all a million dollars – actually, you’re priceless.  3. Grace and poise. You were never daunted by anything (timelines, cake pedestals, “MOBzillas”)       4. Patience…with everything we wanted (and didn’t want) for our wedding. You never, ever, made me feel like any of my requests were unreasonable (even though I know, at times, I was the poster-child for Bridezilla).5. Knowledge and Expertise. You gave us such structure, connected us with the right vendors and kept us in the momentum moving forward. 6. Organization. Jay and I both have a passion for organization, so naturally we greatly appreciated how organized and efficient y’all are. Everything ran so smoothly and went off without a glitch.7. Communication. It was such a relief knowing that I could call or email you at any time and get a quick response back. You generously gave your time to us during the planning process and never grew weary. Your emotional support and encouragement (especially during my dress “melt down”) was priceless. We appreciate your helpful spirits, abounding energy, and perma-positive attitude.
8. Style and Creativity. So many people have commented to me about how much money my mom must have dropped on a bash of this caliber…if only they knew! Your classic style and expansive creativity allowed us to have a champagne wedding (and honeymoon) on a beer budget. I loved that you were never overbearing or pushy. All the special touches you suggested were incredible.9. After wedding planning. Not only were there any loose ends the day of the wedding, there wasn’t one loose end after the wedding either!  All groomsmen tuxes were safely returned, venue security deposits in hand, and our wedding gifts were waiting for us at our new home (to avoid contact with parents and in-laws).    10. Flawless execution. You should probably change your name to “The Wedding Fairies” because what you pulled off was truly magical. Our entire wedding experience far surpassed every one of our (very high) expectations & hopes. It couldn’t have happened without you.    (more...)
