Choosing the right prom dress
Q: I'm short and want to look taller for my prom. What should I do?
A: There are three elements that can help you appear taller on your special night: the right heels, the right prom dress, and the right hairstyle. First, plan on wearing high heels. Whether you add one inch or three with high heels, it's important that you look for prom dresses that will accommodate the heels. You might want to go with a cocktail length dress, but a floor length dress will add length to your body – and an illusion of height. Look for floor length prom dresses that have side slits for better maneuverability. Finally, take care in selecting your hairstyle. Go with an updo to add height – even if you need to add extensions or a hairpiece.

For some guys, renting a tuxedo for prom may be the first time they need to dress in a formal tuxedo or suit. At RaeLynn's we help make this process as easy as possible with our knowledgable staff. Please take a look at the follow tips on how to prepare for renting your tuxedo for prom!

Ralph Lauren Crossroads Style 993 Three button single breasted styling with a non vented back. Features satin grosgrain lapels and buttons and flap pockets with grosgrain trim.
- Visit RaeLynn's Boutique three to four weeks prior to the event to have your measurements taken. Our good sales associates measure around your chest (both including and excluding the width of your arms); your waist at belt height; your hip girth, including your seat; your neck circumference; and your sleeve length from the center of your back.
- Consider cuts that complement your build and accommodate the formality of the occasion, in addition to matching your dates dress. Our tuxedo staff will help you find a prom tuxedo style that fits your look and body style.
- Prepare to pay between $100 and $150, excluding tax, for a tuxedo rental that includes pants, jacket, shirt, tie, cummerbund, shirt buttons, cufflinks, socks and shoes. Prices vary depending on the cut and make of the tux, and on whether you want a vest, a special necktie, or fancier cufflinks and buttons. You will be required to place a $50 deposit when you have your measurements taken, and pay the balance before leaving with tux in hand.
- Come back to RaeLynn's for a final tuxedo fitting a few days before your prom. The rental price includes minor alterations you may need; a lift in the sleeve or a tuck in the waist to be dancing through the wee hours comfortably and in style.
- Pay attention when our sales associate explains how to get dressed in your prom tux rental. You may find you're all thumbs with the special buttons, cufflinks, cummerbund and tie if you do not understand how to put them together.
- Return your tuxedo the sunday after your event. You are not required to dry-clean the rental, but damages and excessively late returns will be add to your final bill.

Indianapolis, Indiana – 12-April-2012 – It's the stuff dreams are made of. Hot off the style runways, rows of brightly colored dresses thrill girls of all ages as they imagine a night at the prom, pageant or other festive gala.
RaeLynn's Boutique opened 3 1/2 years ago in a modest Greenwood storefront and has received many accolades.
It was named No. 1 boutique in Indianapolis by WRTV (Channel 6), and designer Jovani recognized it the past two years as one of its top prom dress retailers in the United States.
Owner Alison McDaniel and Bridgett Chittum are invited to swanky preview events on the East and West coasts to give opinions on dress designs before they are sent to manufacturers.
December to May is prom season. On a typical Saturday or Sunday, about 150 girls are trying on dresses in the eight available dressing rooms at RaeLynn's Boutique, 455 Greenwood Park Drive South, Greenwood IN 46142.
RaeLynn's keeps a registry of prom dresses so that — heaven forbid — no one arrives at their prom with a "twin" across the room. For every prom tuxedo rental, $5 is donated back to the student's school.
McDaniel took a timeout recently to talk with the Indianapolis Star about her business.
Question: How did you get in this?
Answer: I found out I wasn't a stay-at-home mom, and since I had worked in a bridal shop, I started thinking about prom dresses.
Q: Who is RaeLynn?
A: Bridgett and I were calling each other by our first and middle names one day, and we got to thinking how our middle names would sound together.
Q: What was your prom like?
A: Puffy sleeves, taffeta sleeves, organza skirts. Back in the day, there were no patterns on dresses, no low cutouts. Everything was more conservative.
Q: What's hot this year?
A: There is a comeback in peacock and mermaid dresses, feathers, ruffles and high-low, with the hem short in the front and longer in the back. Tuxedos are less boxy . . . a more athletic fit.
Q: How about accessories?
A: Big, bold dangle earrings; platform heels; chunky bracelets and fun flowers in the hair.
Q: What are some of the Southside prom themes in recent years?
A: Cinderella, Casino, Mardi Gras. Some girls buy their dresses according to the themes.
Q: How many employees do you have?
A: It's just me and Bridgett, with 18 part-time high school and college girls. I never hire more than one or two from each school.
Q: How far do your customers travel?
A: They come from as far as Kansas, South Dakota, out East. Some girls attending the Super Bowl with their families came in; it amazes me because they like the small "mom-and-pop" stores.
Q: Who is your most famous customer?
A: We dressed Katie Stamm of Seymour when she was Miss America.
Q: What's coming up for next year?
A: We will see a return to classic styles, off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder, jewel tones … a more sophisticated look.

Prom. So many dresses, so little time. It goes without saying that along with the general anticipation for prom season, there are mixed emotions of anxiety and excitement that follow closely in its wake. The one object of focus that causes issues for most people is of course, the 'prom dress'. The single most important piece of merchandise a girl will ever purchase, aside from her wedding gown. When venturing out to prom dress stores on your quest for that perfect piece of material that fits like a glove and makes you feel like a million bucks, it is important to keep a few things in mind.
Truths about Buying Prom Dresses Online
Three words. Major No No. I say this for the simple reason that it is never a good idea to purchase something as pricey as a prom dress over the internet. Not only because you are missing out on the chance to be a good Samaritan by supporting your local dress store with some much needed business, but because prom dress shopping via computer screen and mouse is nothing like shopping for regular clothing. Many prom dress designers make their size charts based on different measurements and this means GUESS AND CHECK. Which basically boils down into a big inconvenient mess for you when you eventually receive your gown (and who knows how long that can take in and of itself, assuming it does show up). Pants and shirts are sized nothing like prom dresses and require a whole other set of measurements. Even if you are familiar with how dress measurements are taken and you are “pretty sure” that the dress taunting you on the screen of your computer is the one that you want, don’t hit that Add to Shopping Cart button because there is never a guarantee that what you see is what you get with online shipping.
Saving Now Costs More Later
Pinching a penny here might hemorrhage your cute little wallet later. It is always an attractive deal when you can see your dream dress with a cheap tag attached to it. However, be sure to shop around and do your research before you make that final purchase because most stores will not take returns or perform refunds. It is vital that you begin your shopping early for this reason. NOTE: Also remember that some stores will advertise that they are having certain sales or mark downs, but the truth is that they may only be hiking their prices up even higher just to say they are “marking them down” to their normal store price so you aren’t truly getting any deal or sale at all. Quality is also another aspect of the package to consider when buying your dress. Saving a couple dollars to buy a poor quality dress that might not hold up as well as an excellent quality prom dress isn’t the route to take, especially if you want to possibly sell your dress after you are finished with it.
Customer Service
Be sure to buy a dress from the store that works for you and fights for your business. Every individual deserves to be treated like royalty and customer service is vital. Respect and honesty are important along with product knowledge. It is always important to look for this in each store’s customer service because the store that services you well demonstrates to you that they have an interest in forming a relationship with you and that they value your business. A store that services you well the first time will serve you even better down the road.
If you love it, buy it
If you find that you try on a prom dress and your heart falls in love with it, Buy It. No more can truly be said here because it is that black and white. Whether it is the first dress you put on, or the 25th, if you put it on and hate the thought of another girl wearing it to your prom, pull out the plastic and take it home with you. Prom dresses sell extremely quick and who’s to say that 5 minutes after you leave to “think on it” someone else won’t walk in with no qualms and buy it for themselves. Bottom line, if you love it, buy it.
Stores with Registries
Enough cannot be said about shopping at stores with a registry for their prom dresses. This amazing list is what will keep you from that embarrassing moment when you walk in and see someone else in YOUR DRESS! And knowing your luck, it might just be that one girl in your school that inspires anything but warm fuzzy feelings. Who wore it best?? Yeah, let’s just skip that drama and not find out.
Shop it like you’ll wear it
When you finally find that one prom dress that makes you see stars, ask for jewelry and shoes to go with it. Its important to see what you will look like on your special night ahead of time so you can spend your time focusing on more important things…like hair. Its also a good way to yet again test the store’s customer service.

Why do you want to be one of RaeLynn's Models?
I would love to be a RaeLynns model because I had a wonderful experience in their store when I bought my prom dress. Everyone was so nice and helpful and I would love to help promote their awesome store. I would also like to boost my chances of modeling in other areas in hopes of making some extra money to help me with my college expenses. I am going to college to become a nurse so that one day I may help others. Thank you for your consideration in voting for me too. –Mari Green
