i've always loved valentine's day, so when roxanne coady of rj julia booksellers fame asked us to design valentine packaging for just the right book [jtrb], we jumped at the chance. understanding that this gift program is a premium service or a 'selected purchase' we needed compelling packaging—something experiential with a dash of the unexpected.
with that in mind, we based our packaging concept on japanese furoshiki, the ancient art of fabric wrapping that just exudes a quiet elegance. i first experienced furoshiki 16 years ago when i registered for wedding gifts at felissimo in nyc—in those days that clodagh-designed townhouse at 10 West 56th Street was a refuge for me during lunch hour.
furoshiki marries a luxurious feel with an eco-friendly sensibility. it was a perfect fit for JTRB. once the concept was approved, we enlisted the undeniably talented joanne schmaltz [did you catch our earlier post on joanne?] to capture the essence of the design. everyone raved. and now you can find it all together online here ! it really makes a great valentine gift for the one you love.
below is a closer look at the final packaging. would love to hear what you think. . .

the outer package, a two piece box sealed with custom wax and a woven two-toned ribbon

the custom wax seal and ribbon detail—"medicine for the soul" attributed to library at thebes

inside the box you'll find the furoshiki | japanese fabric wrap
the tip on with embossed logo and custom valentine insert which includes instructions on how to reuse/retie the furoshiki
and the lovely books with hand-made chocolates from our favorite confection shop given.
